The services required

Removalists offer a selection of different services, usually on a “pick and mix” basis. For example, some individuals prefer to do their own packing, whilst others prefer a removalist team to pack. Similarly, some people provide their own packing materials, some prefer to use those provided by the removals company. The more of the move you complete yourself, the less it’s going to cost. Typically, removalists offer the following services:

Provision of packing materials.
Packing.
Loading onto the truck.
Transport to the on-going destination (either the final location or to temporary storage).
Unloading the goods.
Unpacking.

Size of the load

It makes sense that it will cost more to move the contents of a townhouse compared to moving the contents of a modest apartment. Many removalists offer discounted rates for small, local moves, as these can frequently be slotted in between bigger jobs.

Type of items to be moved

Volume of possessions isn’t the only consideration when it comes to cost. Awkwardly shaped objects, large objects or items that require specialised moving can all cost more to transport. If you’ve got a piece of machinery, a grand piano, or items that need to be temperature controlled or similar, it’s worth checking with the removalist how these can be transported in the most affordable manner.

Distance to be moved

The further your goods need to be transported, the greater the cost. Longer trips will require two drivers, as well as obviously take longer and require more fuel than a local move. If your new home or office isn’t ready for your possessions to be unpacked into it, you may have to consider temporary storage. This can add significantly to the cost of your move. If possible, try to time transportation so that storage isn’t needed, particularly if cost is an issue.
